Uniboom® U - Submersible Containment Booms

The deployment of a traditional oil boom will always require some time and manpower. The time available to limit the extension of an oil spill is often very short. The Markleen Submersible Boom provides unmanned high speed boom deployment allowing full control of the spill at its source just after the accident. Boom deployment becomes so easy that booms may be used everytime, or so fast that even if the booms are not in position when a spill occurs, the oil will be contained anyway.

Operation

The Markleen Submersible Boom has a continous cylindrical flotation chamber.  When the chamber is filled with air, the boom floats as a normal containment boom. At the push of a button, the chamber fills with water and the boom sinks instantly to its permanent storage position at the sea floor. Minutes later, the boom may again be at the surface.

Construction

The Markleen Submersible Boom construction is made to last: only heavy duty non-corrosive materials are used throughout the construction.

  • External fabric: Polyester reinforced PVC. The material combines excellent UV and hydrocarbons resistance with high tear and tensile strength.
  • High Density Polyethylene (HDPE): Used in the “skeleton” of the boom. The main characteristic of this material is the good balance between strength and flexibility enabling the boom to be inflated with up to 10 bar air pressure, i.e. the boom can be refloated from up to 95 m depth. The corrosion and hydrocarbons resistance of the HDPE is also excellent.
